The Kills “List of Demands” Music Video
The Kills recently shot their music video, “List of Demands,” at Goya Studios. The band used Stage A for the shoot, which offers 4600 square feet of space, brick walls and polished concrete floors.
“List of Demands” is a reworking of a popular Saul Williams song, featuring a mix of distorted guitar and vocals. Directed by Ben Strebel, the music video creates a prison-like setting with an interrogation scene including the two band members.
Alison Mosshart, the band’s lead vocalist, says the single is about feeling powerful and strong.
“It’s a song of strength and empowerment, rooted in the idea of rising above,” she said. “It was one of those songs you’re almost scared to cover, because it carries so much respect. It wasn’t a straight up love song or a drug song. It was defined, serious, and perfect already. With certain songs, you feel like an intruder trying to sing them, but this one felt like my own.”
The band’s guitarist Jamie Hince also derived great meaning in the song.
“‘List of Demands’ was so impactful to us-it was the kind of song that would come on backstage and everyone would stop what they were doing and stand up,” he said in a statement.” The more I found myself listening to the lyrics, the more I heard in them, and found myself singing along with goose bumps. The brilliant thing about it is that it speaks to so many different ideas-a true underground thing like the best Iggy Pop songs”
Street artist and activist Shepard Fairey, who designed the artwork for the single and “has been a fan of The Kills for years,” echoes Hince’s sentiment.
“We need music that speaks to the struggles of the average person in the face of oppressive powers,” he says. “The art I created was meant to reflect the sentiment of the song and the idea that people have power in numbers and are looking back at those in power with their hands up, making their demands. The do-it-yourself spirit of punk rock and activist propaganda influenced the art and design”
Musician and poet Saul Williams was honored that the London-based band chose to cover his 2004 hit.
“I liked The Kills before they chose to cover LOD. If they can feel themselves in that song it’s because they are as much a part of it as I am.”
The Kills will begin touring in Washington DC on May 14, followed by shows in Russia and Europe. The band will also join the Foo Fighters on their European tour this summer, including a show at London’s Olympic Stadium on June 23.
